Over the weekend I had the amazing opportunity to go the We Love Green festival, held right outside of Paris in Parc de Bagatelle. It’s an eco-friendly festival run completely on solar power, and expensive “natural” and “organic” food. I won’t lie: I initially bought the tickets to see Lorde, but as the festival went on, I found myself falling in love with all of the groups that played. When I first arrived it was a bit intimidating as there were hordes of hipsters, but when the music started playing I was able to just block them out.
The first
group to play was led by the English singer Denai Moore whose voice is as
smooth as honey, and whose words blend together in a dreamlike way. Though many
in the audience didn’t know her music, she managed to captivate everyone with
her dynamic vocals. My favorite song that she sang was “The Lake” because as
she sung it gave me a feeling (an amazing feeling) deep in my gut that words
cannot explain. You can check out “The Lake” and the rest of her work on her
soundcloud.
Next up was
Moodoid, a French Psychedelic pop group. Their makeup and clothes clicked
perfectly with their songs and the lead singers dance moves complemented it
all. Throughout the performance I never felt bored, simply because there was so
much going on that you didn’t even have the chance to be bored.
Earl
Sweatshirt played next and while the start of their performance was a bit
bizarre, the rest was okay. Personally I’m not a fan, but I could totally see
how others love their music.
Then it was
Jungle’s time in the spotlight. Personally, I think that they gave the best
performance out of anyone that played. I didn’t know any of their songs before,
but as they performed I found myself singing along because their lyrics were so
catchy. They worked as a group really well, and the layers of vocals were
really well done. As soon as I came home from the concert I immediately googled
them, depressed to find that their debut album ONLY comes out on July 15th.
Until then I’ll just have to listen to the few released singles that they
have to hold me over.
Finally,
the person who I initially came for, Lorde, came out and sang. Her live
performance is simple, but addicting. As the whole crowd sang along to every
word of every song I got this euphoric feeling that felt like tons of tiny
little fireworks in my stomach. It was a really satisfying performance, which
might be a weird way to describe it, but that’s exactly what it was.
I left
before the Foals because I had been standing up for six hours, had to pee, and
was really hungry.
Overall I
think my first festival performance was really good, and I’m happy I got the opportunity
to discover new bands (Jungle most of all).
